LAGLIO

THE VILLAGE

Laglio, situated between the inhabited centers of Laglio and Torriggia, serves as a sort of watershed between the first and second basins of Lake Como, which is the narrowest part of Lario. Its roots trace back to Roman times when it already hosted military garrisons and customs posts, as evidenced by the presence of the Torriggia tower. The name "Laglio" itself derives from the Roman commander Lallius.

In the early Christian era, Laglio was part of the Pieve di Nesso and later fell under Spanish rule. Between 1928 and 1948, Laglio shared the status of a single municipality with Brienno. In the heart of the Laglio village, we find the Church of San Giorgio, built on the remnants of an older building from the 17th century, housing precious stuccos dating back to the 18th century, crafted by Stefano Salterio, a native artist of Laglio.

The village's cemetery is known for an unusual pyramid-shaped funerary monument erected by Giuseppe Frank in the 19th century. Giuseppe Frank was the son of a renowned German physician, known at the time for the lavish parties held in his palace on Via Borgovico.
Laglio provides an ideal starting point for excursions along the lake's shore and the surrounding hills, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The slopes above the village are cultivated with vineyards, olive groves, and laurel trees, from which medicinal laurel oil was once extracted.

At an altitude of approximately 600 meters in the mountains of Laglio, you'll find the Buco dell'Orso cave, a complex of caves and siphons containing fossil remains of the extinct cave bear. These caves have not yet been fully explored. Additionally, a trip to Monte di Torriggia is recommended, as it provides an opportunity to observe falcons, kites, and buzzards, as well as witness migratory routes towards Switzerland and northern Europe.

Today, Laglio is a tranquil lakeside village that offers a captivating atmosphere and an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Lake Como. The narrow, winding streets, picturesque, colorful houses, and panoramic vistas make Laglio a fascinating place to explore. The village is perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape by the lake, away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities, and it offers an authentic experience of Italian life.
